Classic Music Boxes: How to Maintain Them?
Classic music boxes are often passed down as an heirloom from one generation to another; despite the modern day CD players, music boxes have retained their charm and elegance. A novelty in 1796 when they were invented, these music boxes were inspired by the carillon bell towers seen all across Europe. These bell towers used the same music generating technology which comprised of a rotating barrel with cogs that helped to strike hammers on tuned bells, creating a melody.
The history of classic music boxes
The classic music boxes were made possible after the introduction of the tuned steel music note also known as the tooth; the tiny device was invented in the 18th century and made it possible for the watchmakers of Switzerland to use their creativity to fuel an entirely new industry, that of music boxes. The sector grew rapidly as the the demand for music boxes increased across Europe and the United States.
The tiny melodious creations were used for a plethora of purposes; some were small enough to fit into a gentleman’s pocket and were designed to hold snuff while other were large enough to house hats when not in use. However, the vast majority of them were show pieces that would make their way to the tabletops of the rich and elite of the time.
The unprecedented progress of the industry led to a hiring spree and at one point almost 100,000 workers were devoted to manufacturing classic music boxes for patrons on both sides of the Atlantic. Some of the popular manufacturers of music boxes included Nicole Freres, Reymond Nicole, George Baker, Paillard Vaucher Fils P.V.F, B.A. Bremond, L’ Epee, Heller and Baker-Troll among others.
The offerings includes a myriad of objects with a musical heart at their center such as the sublime harmonie, bird boxes with mandoline and orchestra cylinder music boxes. However, the cylinder music box industry experienced a set back in the 1880 that it could not rise out of when the interchangeable disc box was introduced to the world.
Patrons would not longer had to resign to listening to the same tune over and over again. These interchangeable disc music boxes, as their name suggested, made it possible for the purchaser to go out and buy multiple disc for the music box, a new disc could easily replace the old one changing the melody.
The classic music boxes of today!
Today, only one Swiss maker still manufactures classic music boxes while a Japanese company Sankyo dominates the market with a large range of products that includes jewelry boxes, toys and other novelty items. So, it goes without saying, that if you own one of the classics, you have an expensive piece of musical history in your hands which should be cherished and maintained. Here are some tips that will help.
Maintaining classic music boxes
Keep them away from moisture and direct sunlight. Depending on the material that the music box is made if, it would be best to shield it from environmental elements.
Metal boxes should be wiped regularly, you can also use a mild cleanser to keep the surface clean and bright.
The musical moment will corrode if not operated. So, ensure that you regularly use the music box.
Oiling the moment is another way to ensure that it stays working as good as new.
If you are interested in purchasing classic music boxes, your first choice should be a cylinder box and then one with interchangeable discs. There are several small companies that offer an assortment of items such as crockery, jewelry holders and time pieces with a musical movement in them; these make fabulous gift items.

Somewhere in Time (Collector’s Edition) $3.93 It’s silly, it’s superficial, it’s so desperately earnest about its tale of time-spanning love that you almost wish for a cheap flatulence gag just to break the solemn mood. The film has become a staple of romantic-movie lovers since its release in 1980, and endless … |

Hercules (Gold Collection) $9.99 Not the egregious foul it seemed to be in theaters, Hercules stands up as an entertaining spritzer of an animated feature. The continual peppering of in-jokes and cultural references becomes less irksome on video. That there’s no majesty or awe invested in the beloved Greek legends also seems less of an error. Also on the plus side is the bounciest Alan Menken music since Little Shop of Horrors. W… |

The Find $15.98 Depending on your point of view, The Find is either an album whose ideology and overall vibe are stuck in the ’90s or a new-millennium hip-hop album that bears influence of the foundation while providing an updated spin from a talented artist. The latter sentiment is most accurate. Producer/MC Ohmega Watts and a host (and that means host) of friends make The Find a worthwhile listen for any hip-hop fan. With Watts in control, he takes obvious nods to iconic producers (Pete Rock, Diamond D — he rhymes similar to Large Professor) and the sound of hip-hop’s ’90s renaissance, while rearranging it in his own distinct way. The six-minute “A Request” is an updated ’90s head-nodder with a two-minute rideout that appropriates everything from Souls of Mischief to Gang Starr, with some timpani/cowbell percussion to boot. Ohmega lays down a gritty, strutting groove for “Full Swing” as MCs Neogen and Deacon join him on the mike for an old-fashioned cipher. But even in the midst of a staple track like this, Ohmega manages to finds about 20 seconds in the middle of the tune to do some electronic space traveling. Watts also shows himself a capable and diverse producer, venturing outside the realm of the hip-hop idiom. “Your Love” is a hip-hop/soul vehicle for singer Tiffany Johnson, while “Treasure Hunt” (featuring Sugar Candy) is straight-up authentic dancehall-style reggae. The electric guitar shredding through “Groovin’ on Sunshine” highlights one of his several largely instrumental tracks. The Find is very close to a perfect creative balance between exploration and traditionalism, and an impressive debut from a hip-hop commodity. ~ Vincent Thomas, Rovi Performers: Calton “Solovox” Tietze – Clavinet, Organ (Hammond); Daniel Lamb – Trumpet (Muted), Horn, Trombone; Jason Wells – Horn; Stro The 89th Key – Fender Rhodes, Synthesizer; Barry Hampton – Guitar, Bass; Jason Bringle – Guitar; Ohmega Watts – Keyboard Guitar, Sound Effects, Melodica, Keyboards, Drums, Synthesizer, Organ |

(Victoriaville) 1992 $19.98 This is a live performance of Braxton’s classic quartet of the ’80s and ’90s at the annual festival of new music held in Victoriaville, Canada. Unlike many of the other documented recordings of this group, the material, with the exception of the closing track, consisted entirely of (at the time) recently composed pieces. Since much of Braxton’s writing in the early ’90s involved the exploration of very fluid and expansive sound territories, there are none of his infectious, bop-derived numbers or any plaintively emotional ballads. Instead we have a series of fairly knotty compositions where the thematic elements are elusive, recurring melodies rare and regular meter almost non-existent. All of which makes for one of the more challenging recordings by this quartet, requiring of the listener an approach perhaps more suited to contemporary classical music than to jazz. In fact, in the excellent and detailed liner notes/interview by John Corbett, Braxton makes reference to his concept of “navigating through form” and to the music and graphic scores of the composer Earle Brown. One is advised, therefore, not to listen for the standard (even as that term applies to Braxton’s music) theme/solos/theme format here; rather, one listens to the musicians, alone or in groups, investigating the rich, strange soundscape structure in which they find themselves immersed. Even so, there’s a feeling of pent up energy waiting to be unleashed so when the band vaults into a raging version of Coltrane’s “Impressions” as an encore, it’s hardly surprising. Indeed, one detects a very human sense of relief as they step back into familiar territory. ~ Brian Olewnick, Rovi |

…And They Have Escaped the Weight of Darkness $16.98 They must be putting something in the water over there in Iceland that makes musicians work in unexpected ways. Their biggest pop and rock exports — Bj? rk and Sig? r Ros, respectively — have borne very little relation to what the rest of the world thinks of as pop and rock, so why should their most promising young neo-classical composer be any different? At an age when most young men are still trying to decide between grad school and the night shift at Denny’s, Olafur Arnalds has already made a name for himself as a musical maverick who skirts the edges of the classical, rock, electronic, and avant-garde worlds with enthusiastic ease, a Nico Muhly with a higher tolerance for cold weather, if you will. On his second full-length release, Arnalds moves further away from electronics to embrace a more acoustically oriented approach centered on piano and strings. Electronics do play a supporting role — they’re simply used to enhance the atmosphere here and there, but in the main, Arnalds is creating 21st century chamber music here, as the piano makes simple, elegant statements whose harmonic possibilities are further fleshed out by the strings. And Arnalds may be a modernist in terms of pushing stylistic boundaries, but he still has some old-school, downright romantic notions about melodic movement — you won’t find any polytonality or serial music among these tracks. Arnalds prefers instead to repurpose old-school harmonic conventions in a new context, offering the listener a readily accessible emotional connection but still breaking new ground. And on the few strategic spots in the album where Arnalds drops in drums and/or electric guitar and repetitive motifs, the effect is not dissimilar to the headier moments of the aforementioned Sig? r Ros, or perhaps early-? 70s Pink Floyd at their most ethereal, showing the rock crowd that they too have a point of entry into this music. ~ J. Allen, Rovi |

1184 $21.98 Formerly a one-man band, ? la Trent Reznor, black metal vocalist Valfar finally expanded the lineup of Windir to a full band on 1184. The classically influenced sound of the band is much more fully realized with the addition of these members, bringing them much closer to the forefront of the movement that bands like Emperor and Mayhem have led since the early ’90s. Featuring some amazing composition skills on “Todeswalzer” and “1184,” at first the band seems as though they have finally found the perfect mid-ground between black metal and classical music. But as the songs go on, the band slips further and further towards the metal side of things. Even their blatant attempts at blending the genres, “Heidra” and “Journey to the End,” go too far in the other direction and sound more like heavy metal blended with new age. But there are some really good, fresh ideas and riffs to be found here, and, despite the varying experimental tendencies, this still documents a band trying to do more with the genre than most metal bands. Black metal fans will want to give this a listen, and even brave classical fans might want to hear this at least to find out what a metal band can do with a lot of ambition. ~ Bradley Torreano, Rovi |
