What is the one thing that jazz vocal lessons absolutely must achieve?

I’ll answer that in a minute, but first, let’s sum up what’s needed to be a great jazz singer.

Firstly, you need a very big vocal range. There is no other style that practically demands a lot of usable vocal range. For this reason you need to develop very strong vocal bridges, so you can easily move from your lower notes, to your higher ones.

This is best done by becoming familiar with your main vocal registers. Your chest voice is where you create your lower tones, whereas your higher notes should be sung in your mixed voice and your head voice.

As a jazz musician, you also need great tone variation. And you need to be able to have very precise control over the way you vary your tone. You need to have a very beautiful, delicate side to you, as well as power and grunt…

Another very important aspect of singing great jazz is having many licks and trills in your repertoire. When you’ve built up a large library of different elements of “style”, it will become instinctive to you and you will be able to move effortlessly through pieces, adding your own personal style and flair to the piece.

Ok, so what is the number one thing that jazz vocal lessons absolutely must do?

Well, here it is: Jazz vocal lessons must cause correct technique in your voice. Now that sounds obvious at first, but the truth is that so much of the vocal instruction out there does nothing but cause bad technique and hinder your ability to sing your best.

And with jazz, you must have an impeccably trained voice… with other styles of music you may get away with a “less than perfectly trained voice”. But in a technically demanding genre such as jazz, it’s crucial to have solid technique.

Fortunately there are certain exercises (some which are quite strange) that program your voice for success. These exercises automatically work correct technique into your voice, and unlike most training, results come very quickly.

I know this because I myself, struggled for years with my voice (before finding exercises that work). Once I found an approach that re-programmed my voice to function correctly though, things happened very quickly.

The training I’m about to show you is more suited to jazz than anything else. The reason is: not only does it have an incredible “technique section” where you will learn to sing exactly the way your voice was designed to function… it also has a comprehensive “style” section that will put you on par with most “jazz masters”. 3 $14.98 On their sardonically named third album, 3, New York City’s multi-ethnic Electroputas tell you right off the bat that they are sonic absurdists, favoring discordance over grace, but they are also unrepentant groovemeisters of a supreme order, taking a decidedly Krautrock approach to extended jams with undeniable hooks. The Social Registry website says it best: “From a storm of musical chaos emerges the trio Electroputas with chunks of noise, swathes of psychedelic fervor, and large dashes of complete freakout fever.” All but the most hardcore of noiseniks will want to fast-forward through the first track, “International Harvest,” as its two minutes and change of wordless screams, growls, stutters, and chants seem to go on for ten times that length. But anyone who appreciates a disjointed yet rollicking groove will be rewarded with track two, “AA,” and its chordal bass (recalling Spinal Tap’s “Big Bottom”!), shimmying organ, spazzy guitar, and little Japanese girl vocals reminiscent of Cibo Matto or Deerhoof. The latter band’s complex instrumentals are also referenced on the herky-jerky guitar/bass duel of “Echo Temptation,” as is the late, great Thinking Fellers Union Local 282. “Master Triangle” is a sincere homage to one of the band’s biggest influences, Can, a bass-driven piledriver (as are most of the songs here), especially in the vocals ripped straight from that band’s inimitable Damo Suzuki. “Profundo Rosso” is a post-punk/free jazz guitarist’s wet dream as a tinny electric careens from speaker to speaker, accompanied by vocals seemingly in Spanish, French, and Italian, garbled through some of the bandmembers’ Japanese accents (most of the lyrics are unintelligible, quite possibly intentionally, except for this classic couplet from “AA”: “I like the taste of whiskey on my lips/So you said, my superstar”). And the utter meltdown of “More” will make you want to light your stereo on fire and throw it through a tenth-story window (in a good…

There’s that wonderful thoughtful lyricism that characterizes Evans’ work, but he adds a little more embellishment to his playing than the late master, nudging closer (not close) to Oscar Peterson. This respectable uniting of styles is apparent in a perceptive seven-and-a-half minute exploration of “Star Eyes,” where every aspect of this popular 1943 classic standard is probed, pushed, pulled, and prodded by Peck and his cohorts. And his cohorts are critical to the success of this session. Dean Hodges’ drums set the pace without ever becoming intrusive, staying with the traditional role of a drummer in a small group. Chuck Deardorf, on the other hand, gets ample opportunity to enliven the musical feast with his refreshing bass solos. He is especially telling on “If I Were a Bell” and on Monk’s “Eronel.” With a play list of jazz and classic standards, Brazilian rhythms, and originals by Peck, 3 and 1 is welcomed to the jazz piano trio literature with open arms.
